아날로그 프로세스의 장점 - 인터뷰하고 글로 옮겨서 책장을 가득 채군 뒤에 작업

저자는 수많은 사람들을 인터뷰하고 그것을 글로 옮겨서 사무실 책장을 가득 채군 뒤에 작업을 시작. 인상적인 것은 이런 식의 아날로그 편집방식이 컴퓨터를 이용하는 것보다 효율적이었다는 것 

 

인터뷰를 글로 옮긴 인쇄물이 사무실 책장을 가득 채우고 나서야 본격적으로 인쇄물을 자르는 작업을 시작했다. 마치 영화 필름을 자르듯이.
After the interviewing came the transcribing. I had hundreds of hours of transcripts, millions of words of memories. The printouts filled an entire bookcase in my office. Then came the real work: I cut the transcripts together as one might so many reels of film.

나는 컴퓨터 없이는 어떠한 일도 할 수 없을 만큼 컴퓨터에 의존하는데, 이런 구닥다리 편집 방식이 오히려 제일 효과적이라는 것을 새삼스레 깨달았다. 인터뷰를 실수 없이 문서화해 줄 만큼 정확한 인공지능이 아직 없기도 했다. 게다가 사람들을 수소문해서 인터뷰를 하도록 설득하는 과정도 모두 한 땀 한 땀 진행했다.

The editing process was often literally done with printouts, a pair of scissors, and a roll of tape. I’m a big fan of computers: I can’t write without one. But the old-fashioned way of editing still works best, I’ve found. Artificial intelligence is nowhere near good enough to transcribe an interview with any accuracy, accuracy, either. And of course there is no automating the process of reporting: tracking people down and convincing them to talk to me.

Shoe leather, sharp scissors, and Scotch tape made this book possible—an irony that didn’t always seem funny to me. The process took four solid years of full-time work and constant focus. (pg.15)

 

... 책에서 풀어낼 이야기는 내 것이 아니다. 실리콘밸리 사람들이 모두 누려야 할 공동 자산이다. 그래서 독자가 마치 그들에게 직접 듣는 것처럼 그 이야기를 있는 그래로 생생하게 듣기를 원했다.
