- 마크롱은 5년간 경제정책 등에서 의미있는 성과를 내며 (프랑스에서 역사적으로 성공하기 힘든)재선 가능성이 높지만, 아슬아슬한 지지율은 몇가지 심각한 숙제를 남김(다른 국가들에게도 시사점을 줌)

- 넓은 스펙트럼 속에서 치열한 논쟁과 경쟁을 통한 끊임없는 개선(renewal)이 필수적임

1. 현실에만 기초한 정책은 포퓰리즘 경쟁자에 비해 유권자를 흥분시키지 못함(지루할 수 밖에 없는 속성)

2. 중도좌파 및 중도우파 정당은 대통령 중심 정치에서 외곽으로 밀려나고, 좌우 스펙트럼에서의 치열한 선의의 경쟁을 통한 변화와 혁신이 어려워짐
Although the old politics had too many time-serving deputies, the parties of the centre-left and centre-right have become sideshows in presidential politics. True, responsibility for renewal lay with them, but he made their job harder by poaching their best talent.

1. 정치는 집단(tribes)과 정체성에 관한 것이므로 일자리와 경제 성장이라는 물질적 이득(중도적인 가치)은 필요하지만 재선 성공에는 충분하지 않음

2. 한 인간은 급진적 중심을 유지할 수 없으며(개인들은 결함을 가질 수 밖에 없음), 성공적인 시스템은 논쟁과 경쟁을 통한 끊임없는 개선(renewal)이 필수적임.
one person cannot sustain the radical centre. That is not only because too much is riding on each re-election and on a successor turning up, but also because, as centrists know, individuals are flawed.
